Director Tim Burton is bringing the “Beetlejuice” franchise back to theaters with an anticipated sequel. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 4 ahead of its international rollout. The sequel reunited Burton with the original 1988 film’s star Michael Keaton and other cast members over three decades later.
At a recent press conference in Venice, Burton reflected on the lasting popularity of the first “Beetlejuice” movie. While he said he never understood its initial success, the director felt compelled to revisit the supernatural world. Burton clarified the new film was not simply made for profit but comes from a place of passion.
The sequel’s plot centers on the Deetz family returning to their town of Winter River after a tragedy. Winona Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, whose teenage daughter Jenna Ortega unintentionally opens a portal to the afterlife. This paves the way for Michael Keaton to again play the title role of Beetlejuice, described as the “Ghost with the Most.”
Keaton praised the uniqueness of the Beetlejuice franchise at the press event. While opportunities for wholly original projects are rare, he commended the cast additions including Ortega. Burton also blended returning actors like Catherine O’Hara with newcomers Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
The director suggested he had lost enthusiasm for filmmaking in recent years but refound his passion working with loved ones on “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Burton dismissed speculation a third movie could come, joking the 35-year gap between films would make him over 100 by the time of its release.
The Warner Bros. sequel will receive its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before expanding internationally starting September 4 and in North America on September 6. Industry observers are curious to see if Burton’s return to the spooky franchise also signifies a return to creative form.
