Streaming giant Netflix has signed a multi-year deal to develop new projects with acclaimed writer and actor Richard Gadd. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos announced the first-look deal at a television industry event in London on Tuesday. The agreement comes after Gadd recently won multiple Emmy awards for his hit limited series “Baby Reindeer.”
“Baby Reindeer” debuted on Netflix in April and quickly captured worldwide audiences. The semi-autobiographical drama series is based on Gadd’s own experience dealing with relentless stalking. Gadd both wrote and starred in the show, portraying a comedian targeted by stalking.
His raw portrayal of real-life events resonated with over 56 million viewers within its first month. At Sunday’s Emmy ceremony, “Baby Reindeer” received top honors including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Gadd won acting and writing awards, while co-star Jessica Gunning earned recognition for her supporting role.
Despite the show’s critical acclaim, a woman from Scotland has filed a $170 million defamation lawsuit against Netflix. Fiona Harvey claims to be the real person portrayed in the series as the stalker character Martha. Harvey alleges the show damaged her reputation through defamation and violations of her publicity rights.
When asked about the lawsuit, Sarandos defended depicting real events but acknowledged dramatic elements were involved. He noted the legal debate has mostly centered in the UK. Netflix previously said it will “vigorously” support Gadd’s right to tell his story.
By securing the talents of Gadd, Netflix aims to continue leading in original content production. As more outlets enter the streaming sector, landing renowned creators becomes increasingly vital.
