A new partnership aims to bring more diversity and cross-cultural storytelling to animation. N Lite Media, an American animation studio, has teamed up with Japanese company Gonzo K.K. and director Peter Ramsey to produce two projects. The goal is to combine the talents of a Black-owned U.S. studio and a respected Japanese anime producer.
The first project is called “Ripper.” It is set in post-WWII Japan and follows two detectives hunting a serial killer. The film blends live-action and anime styles. It tells the story of two men seeking justice for the women they loved who were murdered. The film’s creators want to explore the shared history between Black Americans and Japanese during the war. Ramsey said the project is “deeply personal” and will cover an important cultural intersection rarely seen on screen.
The second project is “Hotaru,” an adventure series described as “swashbuckling sci-fi/fantasy.” It features two warrior characters separated by love and grief. Ramsey will again serve as an executive producer to help bring the story to life.
CEO Christiano Terry said the partnership represents N Lite’s vision of building bridges between cultures. Gonzo K.K. CEO Shinichiro Ishikawa agreed, stating the projects were planned as inclusive international co-productions. The goal is entertaining diverse global audiences.
The collaboration highlights growing trends in animation. By uniting a Black media company, respected Japanese studio and award-winning director, the projects aim to offer fresh perspectives and break new ground narratively. For N Lite, it positions them as innovators creating inclusive content that expands the possibilities of storytelling.
