The Year of Remakes: 9 of Metacritic’s Top 10 Games of 2023 are Remasters or Remakes

It seems that remasters, remakes, and other forms of refreshes have taken center stage in the world of gaming this year. According to ratings, these titles have been dominating the lists of the biggest hits so far in 2023. If you take a look at the list of the highest-rated games released this year, you’ll find that most of them are remasters and remakes.

While some players criticize the trend of re-releasing games, it’s hard to deny that these titles offer some of the most exciting gaming experiences available on the market today.

As of now, Metacritic’s top 10 games of 2023 are all remasters or remakes. It’s still early in the year, but it’s surprising to see that nine out of the top ten games fall into this category.

Looking at the list on Metacritic, it’s easy to see why. The highest-rated game of the year so far is Metroid Prime Remastered for the Nintendo Switch with a score of 95/100.

Next on the list is the next-gen version of The Witcher 3, followed by the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which occupies three spots on the list for its PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5 versions.

Rounding out the list are Tetris Effect: Connected for the PS5, Persona 4 Golden, Dead Space, and the only completely new game on the list, Hi-Fi Rush, which has been a hit on Xbox Game Pass.

It’s worth noting that Metacritic publishes these lists by platform, so some games can take up multiple spots. If we combine all versions of the same game, only Hogwarts Legacy, a new IP, makes it onto the top 10 list.

Looking ahead, the rest of the year doesn’t appear to be any different, with Silent Hill 2 Remake, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and a few other remakes in the pipeline.

However, there are also many highly anticipated new titles on the horizon, such as Starfield, the new Zelda game, and Diablo IV, which have the potential to shake up the list on Metacritic. Regardless of what’s to come, it’s clear that 2023 is shaping up to be the year of refreshes in gaming.
