A new chapter in the epic saga of the Planet of the Apes begins this May with the release of the highly anticipated film “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” Directed by Wes Ball, known for The Maze Runner franchise, Kingdom promises to take the franchise started in 1968 with Charlton Heston’s classic Planet of the Apes to thrilling new heights.
Set hundreds of years after the events of the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which saw the super-intelligent ape Caesar lead his people to freedom, Kingdom finds the apes firmly entrenched as the dominant species on Earth. Humans still exist, but only in hiding, fearful of their new overlords.
The Super Bowl spot reveals the film’s premise: One ape ruler seeks out forbidden ancient human technology in order to further enslave his people, while another ape works alongside a young human woman on a daring quest for freedom. Their intertwined fates seem certain to determine the future for all life on the planet.
Starring as the power-hungry ape ruler is Kevin Durand, known for his talent at playing complex villains. Owen Teague of It fame stars as the rebel ape joined by Freya Allan (The Witcher) as his human ally. The heavyweight supporting cast includes Peter Macon, Eka Darville, William H. Macy, and Dichen Lachman.
With Game of Thrones level production values and a story said to take the franchise mythology to new levels, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will emerge from the shadows and stake its claim as the summer’s biggest blockbuster when it opens on May 24. The reign of the apes has begun.
No one can stop the reign.
