In a potential partnership between two tech titans, Apple is reportedly in “active negotiations” with Google’s parent company Alphabet to license and integrate the search giant’s impressive Gemini artificial intelligence system into future iPhone models and the next version of iOS.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the two companies are exploring a deal that would allow Apple to utilize Google’s advanced Gemini AI engine to power new AI-driven capabilities planned for the next iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 18.

The talks come as Apple works to enhance the AI and machine learning features across its product lineup, with a key focus on improving AI capabilities for tasks like generating images, text, and other content based on user prompts within iOS 18.

While Apple is developing its own in-house AI technologies, the potential partnership with Google suggests Cupertino’s efforts may not be as far along as hoped. Integrating the powerful Gemini system could provide a short-term boost while Apple continues advancing its proprietary AI solutions.

Beyond Google, the report also reveals Apple has engaged in discussions with OpenAI regarding potential AI integrations, though no deal has been reached with the Microsoft-backed AI research firm yet.

For Google, allowing Gemini into Apple’s ecosystem represents a major reputational win over Microsoft and OpenAI following struggles with its own consumer AI offerings like the recently paused Gemini image generation due to inaccuracy issues.

The partnership could also have financial benefits, with analysts speculating Google may receive payments from Apple to license its AI tech, building on existing arrangements like Google paying billions annually to remain the default browser on iOS.

While many details remain unclear, including the specific AI capabilities Gemini may enable, the potential Apple-Google deal highlights the increasing strategic importance of advanced AI systems across the tech industry’s biggest players.

As companies race to integrate generative AI into their consumer products and services, collaborations and cross-licensing agreements may become more common to rapidly deploy the latest AI breakthroughs to wider audiences.

For now, all eyes will be on Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 and iPhone releases expected in the fall to see if Google’s Gemini AI makes a debut and what novel AI-powered features it unleashes for hundreds of millions of iPhone users worldwide.
