A decade after the release of the sci-fi hit “Edge of Tomorrow,” director Doug Liman has provided a hopeful update on the much-anticipated sequel. In a recent interview with Total Film, Liman revealed that Warner Bros. Pictures is “constantly bringing up” the possibility of a follow-up to the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt starrer.
“There’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, ‘Will you go and make another one of these?'” Liman stated, highlighting the studio’s persistent interest in the project. This update comes as a surprise to many fans, especially considering the prolonged development process and previous pessimistic statements from the cast.
While “Edge of Tomorrow 2” hasn’t been officially confirmed, Liman’s comments suggest that the project is far from dead. The original film, which followed Major William Cage (Cruise) caught in a time loop during an alien invasion, gained a cult following despite its initial modest box office performance.
However, the path to a sequel has been fraught with challenges. Emily Blunt, in a 2021 interview, expressed concerns about the potential high cost of production. More recently, she questioned how they could approach the premise in a new way, indicating that a script may not yet exist.
If the sequel does move forward, Liman has hinted at significant changes. “Tom and I recently rewatched ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’ together… I wasn’t able to watch it entirely as a viewer, but I was definitely also not the filmmaker anymore,” Liman reflected, suggesting that his approach to a sequel would differ from the original.
Liman has previously teased that the sequel would “revolutionize” how sequels are made, describing it as a “prequel that acts as a sequel.” He also mentioned the introduction of a new character who would “steal the movie,” adding an intriguing element to the potential storyline.
The possibility of “Edge of Tomorrow 2” has been further fueled by Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce original and franchise films. Additionally, Cruise’s social media celebration of the original film’s 10th anniversary has reignited fan interest.
While the return of Cruise and Blunt isn’t confirmed, their involvement would be crucial to the sequel’s success. The project also faces the challenge of addressing the absence of Bill Paxton, who passed away in 2017.
As fans eagerly await more concrete news, it’s clear that “Edge of Tomorrow 2” remains a tantalizing prospect for both the studio and the filmmakers. Whether this long-gestating sequel will finally break out of its own development time loop remains to be seen, but Liman’s latest comments offer a glimmer of hope for those wishing to see more of this innovative sci-fi world.
