Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ Threatens to Overshadow Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot’

As vampire tales resurge in Hollywood, two iconic stories face off in 2024

The horror genre is set for a vampiric resurgence in 2024, with two major adaptations poised to sink their teeth into audiences. However, the much-anticipated remake of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” may find itself in the shadow of Robert Eggers’ reimagining of the classic “Nosferatu.”

After facing numerous delays, the latest adaptation of King’s popular vampire novel is finally slated for release. Yet, its debut could be overshadowed by Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” starring Bill Skarsgård as the iconic pale, pointy-eared vampire. This clash of horror titans presents a potential challenge for “Salem’s Lot,” which has already weathered various development hurdles.

The similarities between the two projects are striking. Both “Salem’s Lot” and “Nosferatu” are quintessential vampire stories set in small towns, featuring antagonists with distinctive appearances: stark white skin, pointed ears, and razor-sharp teeth. This parallel could prove problematic for “Salem’s Lot,” as audiences might perceive it as a smaller-scale version of “Nosferatu” if they view Eggers’ film first.

Adding to “Salem’s Lot’s” challenges is its release strategy. While “Nosferatu” is set for a major theatrical release, King’s adaptation is destined for a streaming debut on Max. This disparity in distribution could significantly impact the films’ respective receptions, with “Nosferatu” potentially garnering more attention and buzz.

However, the vampire renaissance in Hollywood could benefit both films. Recent vampire-themed movies, such as “Abigail,” have received positive reviews, suggesting a renewed interest in the subgenre. “Nosferatu” has the potential to maintain this momentum, possibly paving the way for “Salem’s Lot” to ride the wave of vampire popularity.

Interestingly, “Nosferatu” boasts a connection to a previous adaptation through actor Willem Dafoe. While details about Dafoe’s role in Eggers’ version remain under wraps, this isn’t his first encounter with the Nosferatu character. This adds another layer of intrigue to the upcoming remake.

As for “Salem’s Lot,” it represents a significant piece of Stephen King’s literary legacy, being only the second book he ever published. The pressure is on for this adaptation to do justice to King’s early work while distinguishing itself in a crowded horror landscape.

The impending release of these two vampire tales in 2024 sets the stage for an intriguing showdown in the horror genre. While “Nosferatu” appears to have several advantages, including its theatrical release and star-studded cast, “Salem’s Lot” carries the weight of Stephen King’s name and a dedicated fanbase.

As the release dates approach, horror enthusiasts and casual moviegoers alike will be watching closely to see which vampire story will reign supreme in 2024. Regardless of the outcome, this resurgence of classic horror themes suggests that the vampire subgenre is far from dead and buried in Hollywood.
