In a display of solidarity among the cast of Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton,” actress Simone Ashley has come to the defense of her co-star Nicola Coughlan, who recently faced criticism over her appearance in the show’s third season.
Ashley, who portrays Kate Bridgerton in the Regency-era drama, addressed the issue during the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco. “The haters are going to hate, and I think we can all relate to that, but I really don’t think that she’s allowing that to bother her,” Ashley stated, referring to Coughlan’s resilience in the face of online negativity.
The controversy arose when some viewers speculated that Coughlan’s waist had been digitally altered in the latest season, which focuses on her character Penelope Featherington’s romantic storyline with Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.
Coughlan, known for her role in “Derry Girls” as well as “Bridgerton,” had already responded to these claims earlier this month. “I saw some trolls. They were like, ‘They photoshopped your waist,’ and I was like, ‘No, they did not,'” she told People magazine. The 37-year-old actress explained that the effect was due to the period-appropriate costumes, stating, “I think if you wear corsetry for long enough, your body really molds to it.”
Ashley, 29, took the opportunity to praise her co-star’s character and professionalism. “She has a strong and fruitful career and entire life ahead of her. And I really believe in her, as the world does as well,” she said. The British actress continued her commendation, describing Coughlan as “a gorgeous, strong, confident, intelligent woman” who has been “spreading so much joy and inspiration to everyone — especially women — all over the world” during the press tour for the new season.
The support from Ashley highlights the camaraderie among the “Bridgerton” cast and their commitment to promoting body positivity and mutual respect. As the show continues to captivate audiences worldwide, it seems the bonds formed on set extend beyond the camera, with cast members ready to defend each other against unwarranted criticism.
“Bridgerton” season 3, featuring both Ashley and Coughlan, is currently streaming on Netflix, allowing fans to see for themselves the performances that have sparked both admiration and controversy.
