Marvel Studios revealed major developments for its Cinematic Universe at San Diego Comic-Con, including a shocking return and unexpected villain recast. As the studio updates its film slate, Robert Downey Jr. is set to don a new sinister role after his iconic turn as Iron Man.

Multiple sources have confirmed to this reporter that Downey Jr. will take on the part of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, slated for May 1, 2026. “None of us saw it coming,” said Jeremy Renner. The Hawkeye actor noted even the original six Avengers were left in the dark, as Downey Jr. stealthily kept the secret in their group chat.

Here are the highlights of Marvel’s updated Phase 5 timeline:

  • Thunderbolts (May 2, 2025)
  • Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025)
  • Blade (Nov 7, 2025)
  • Avengers: Doomsday (May 1, 2026)

Industry insider Jeff Sneider tells this outlet Dr. Doom may get an introduction in a mid or post-credits scene of Fantastic Four. This would set the stage for the villain’s prominent role opposing the Avengers in their final showdown.

Marvel is also developing Captain America 4 for 2025, along with new adventures for favorites like Spider-Man, Shang-Chi, and the X-Men. Meanwhile, the Disney+ roster is expanding with Agatha, Wakanda and Daredevil shows on the way.

As always, Marvel fans will be dissecting every hint and tease to unravel the studio’s well-guarded secrets. The highly anticipated Avengers conclusion is sure to satiate viewers – even with an infamous foe like Dr. Doom pulling the strings.
