Scottish actor Ewan McGregor hopes to continue his iconic role of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars franchise. McGregor first portrayed the character in 1999’s “The Phantom Menace” and went on to appear in two additional prequel films. He recently starred in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” released this year.
In a new interview, McGregor expressed interest in playing Kenobi again. He told Variety there may still be untold stories that could be shown between the prequel films and Kenobi’s next appearance mentoring Luke Skywalker. “I’d be open to returning if the opportunity came,” McGregor said.
McGregor has long been connected to the Jedi master, known for his wisdom and skills with a lightsaber. His initial casting in the late 1990s helped launch the Star Wars prequels. Fans anxiously awaited his return in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” which explored the character’s life on Tatooine during a key period after “Revenge of the Sith.”
The future of that Disney+ series is unclear as the company evaluates its Star Wars plans. Several planned streaming shows were recently canceled. Lucasfilm may focus more on Star Wars theatrical films going forward, like the in-development movie about the first Jedi.
For now, McGregor remains hopeful he could rejoin the saga on the big screen. Bringing Kenobi back to theaters would complete the character’s journey across different mediums. As McGregor’s star is honored on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame this year, followers of Star Wars continue hoping for further epics featuring one of its most beloved heroes.
