Despite setbacks, acclaimed actor and director Kevin Costner remains determined to complete his epic “Horizon” western film series. Costner has faced challenges getting the four-part film saga made, but spoke passionately at the recent Venice Film Festival about why he believes in the project. The second installment, “Horizon: Chapter Two,” had its surprise premiere at the prestigious festival.
The first “Horizon” movie underperformed at the box office last year, earning only $11 million its opening weekend. This led the studio to cancel the planned theatrical release of “Chapter Two.” But Costner saw an opportunity when the Venice Film Festival artistic director offered to showcase it. “Alberto bringing this here gave me my dream and didn’t allow it to be squashed,” said a grateful Costner.
While acknowledging the financial reality behind the studio’s decision, Costner believes “Horizon” deserves more time. He pointed out that some of his past movies weren’t initially successful but became respected over time. Costner sees the Civil War era saga as an entertaining four-part epic that examines America’s westward expansion. All scripts have been written and filming of the third part began in May.
Despite uncertainties over funding the remaining films, Costner remains committed. “I’m going to make it,” he stated about the third installment. The actor-producer wrote the “Horizon” screenplay with Jon Baird and has cast members like Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Jena Malone. While challenges could cause others to quit, Costner said obstacles instead raise his determination to complete the “Horizon” vision.
