Streaming service Netflix is currently negotiating to bring the YouTube show “Hot Ones” to its platform. “Hot Ones” invites famous guests on the show to eat increasingly spicy chicken wings while answering interview questions. Host Sean Evans interviews celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, and Conan O’Brien. Their conversations often produce candid and entertaining moments as the wings get hotter.
If finalized, the deal would see “Hot Ones” stream live episodes exclusively on Netflix. This aligns with Netflix’s growing focus on live programming. The company already shows live WWE events and NFL games. In June, “Hot Ones” host Evans said he admires traditional talk shows and competing against them “would be the most important distinction we’ve ever had.”
“Hot Ones” has found major success on YouTube with over 14 million subscribers. Jennifer Lawrence’s episode alone garnered 16 million views. As the popular show’s owner, BuzzFeed is currently seeking to sell First We Feast. While First We Feast produces multiple shows, “Hot Ones” remains its most successful franchise.
Under the potential deal, industry insiders will watch how Netflix integrates “Hot Ones” into its schedule. They also aim to see if the spicy food element translates well to a live streaming format. Acquiring a fresh program like “Hot Ones” could help Netflix stand out and engage viewers more in the crowded streaming market.
Negotiations between Netflix and BuzzFeed are reportedly ongoing. An agreement may be finalized later this month, offering “Hot Ones” a larger audience and Netflix an entertaining new program to bolster its live content selection.
