A24’s upcoming sports drama film “Marty Supreme” about a legendary ping pong player has added Grammy Award-winning recording artist and producer Tyler, the Creator to its cast. The movie already stars actors Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow and marks the first time director Josh Safdie has made a movie without his brother Benny Safdie.
Tyler, the Creator, best known for his music career, will take on his first major acting role in a feature film through “Marty Supreme.” While he has provided voice work for shows like Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” this film marks his biggest on-screen performance. Director Josh Safdie is known for successfully casting non-traditional actors in significant roles, like NBA player Kevin Garnett in “Uncut Gems,” and Tyler follows in those footsteps.

“Marty Supreme” explores the story of Marty Reisman, a real table tennis player who was a world champion over several decades from 1946 to 2002, winning 22 major titles. Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the big screen for the first time since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” She had said only Robert Downey Jr. could convince her to act again but was drawn to this project from A24.
While plot and character details are still emerging, A24 created intrigue by sharing the first promotional photo for “Marty Supreme” on social media last July. Fans and industry insiders will be watching to see how director Josh Safdie, known for his intense storytelling, brings the competitive world of ping pong to the big screen. A release date has not yet been set for the highly anticipated film.
