Cooper Koch has expressed interest in taking on the challenging role of serial killer Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s new film version of American Psycho. Guadagnino, known for Call Me By Your Name and Challengers, will direct the adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial 1991 novel. The project is a fresh retelling of the story, not a remake of the 2000 film starring Christian Bale.
After recently starring in the Netflix drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Koch said he feels ready to take on a darker character like Bateman. “I haven’t played a serial killer yet so I think I could do it,” Koch told The Hollywood Reporter. He also praised Guadagnino’s past work, especially Challengers which Koch called his favorite film from last year.
Scott Z. Burns has been hired to write the American Psycho screenplay. Edward R. Pressman, who produced the original 2000 film, will have a role as executive producer on the new version through his company Pressman Films. Lionsgate will distribute the adaptation.
Koch’s career is gaining momentum following his role in Monsters. He reported receiving more opportunities for roles in movies and meetings with directors. However, nothing is confirmed yet for American Psycho. As Guadagnino remains busy working on other upcoming films like Queer and After the Hunt, actors like Koch will compete for the high-profile role of Patrick Bateman. Koch’s enthusiasm and increased recognition in Hollywood make him a notable candidate if casting begins.
