Warner Brothers Animation and DC Studios have announced plans to create a new animated film focused on Batman’s famous allies. The movie, titled “Dynamic Duo,” will tell the story of how Dick Grayson and Jason Todd first joined forces with the Dark Knight as Robin.
The companies revealed details about the project in a recent social media post from James Gunn, who co-leads DC Studios. Gunn said “Dynamic Duo” represents the first collaboration between Warner Brothers Animation and DC under his and Peter Safran’s leadership of DC.
Famous director Matt Reeves, known for his work on “The Batman” films, will produce the movie through his 6th & Idaho production company. However, “Dynamic Duo” exists separately from Reeves’ live-action Batman universe.
Matthew Aldrich, who co-wrote the award-winning Pixar movie “Coco,” penned the script. Arthur Mintz will direct. Mintz co-founded New Orleans animation studio Swaybox, known for innovative techniques combining CGI, stop-motion, and live footage.
Unlike typical Batman and Robin tales, “Dynamic Duo” focuses on the boys’ relationship as they train together under Batman. It will show how their friendship changes as their visions for the future diverge. This explores the characters before they become Nightwing and Red Hood. However, it’s unclear if the film portrays those later identities.
James Gunn, Peter Safran, Reeves, and Theresa Andersson of Swaybox will produce the film. Veteran comic book producer Michael Uslan serves as executive producer.
“Dynamic Duo” adds to DC’s growing lineup as Gunn and Safran take the helm. It follows “Joker: Folie à Deux” and leads into next year’s highly-anticipated “Superman” reboot kicking off a new DC universe. The animated series “Creature Commandos” also debuts on HBO Max soon.
While no release date is set, fans eagerly await this fresh take on Robin, signaling DC’s commitment to exploring new stories through diverse formats and highlighting lesser-known aspects of its vast comic history.
