The upcoming fourth Bridget Jones movie will take on a more emotional tone compared to previous installments in the popular romantic comedy franchise. Hugh Grant, who plays Daniel Cleaver in the films, described the new film as quite sad while still funny.
Set for release on Valentine’s Day 2025, the untitled film follows the book “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” by Helen Fielding. It centers on Bridget navigating life as a single mother after the death of her husband Mark Darcy, played once again by Oscar winner Renée Zellweger.
Grant, 64, shared his thoughts on the movie during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show. He called the script for the fourth Bridget Jones “good and moving,” signaling a shift to more meaningful themes. However, Grant was quick to note it will still make audiences laugh. “It is extremely funny but very sad,” he said.
Incorporating Grant’s character Daniel Cleaver presented new challenges this time. “There was no obvious role for him,” Grant explained, so he worked with writers to develop “a good interim story.” This ensured Cleaver’s character evolved appropriately from the lovelorn rogue of earlier films.
While plot details are scarce, fans can expect the film to blend humor with weightier subjects. The studio has stayed tight-lipped on following the book closely.
In a personal anecdote, Grant also mentioned his parents initially disapproved of his acting career. “My mother wanted me to become the archbishop of Canterbury instead,” he shared. Despite this, Grant has built an impressive career spanning over four decades in hit rom-coms and other major films.
As the February 2025 release date nears, Bridget Jones followers look forward to witnessing Bridget’s next chapter balanced with familiar funny moments from the cherished series.
