A new biopic about Donald Trump’s ascent in New York real estate will debut in theaters this week, shortly before the 2024 presidential election. The film, titled “The Apprentice,” focuses on Trump’s relationship with his former lawyer and adviser Roy Cohn during the 1970s and 80s. It explores formative events that helped shape Trump’s character and launch his career.
Directed by Ali Abbasi, the movie stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Cohn. It centers on how Cohn mentored and advocated for the young real estate developer. The film suggests this relationship was influential in Trump’s transition to politics later in life. However, Trump’s team has condemned the movie, calling it “pure fiction.”
Early reviews have praised the actors’ performances, particularly Strong’s portrayal of Cohn. Critics note the film provides insights into the close bond between the two men. It also depicts legal cases involving Trump and allegations of discriminatory housing practices in his developments. The film references a 1973 lawsuit where Cohn represented Trump, which ended in a settlement.
Abbasi sees the film as an opportunity to give audiences a fresh perspective on understanding Trump’s background and motivations. But the Trump campaign insists it spreads misinformation and aims to interfere in the upcoming election. They initially threatened legal action over scenes alleging sexual assault by Trump, which were based on divorce records that were later clarified.
Distribution of the movie posed challenges until the independent studio Briarcliff Entertainment acquired it. With a release set for just weeks before voting day on October 11th, “The Apprentice” is poised to spark renewed discussions of Trump’s early life and character as Americans decide whether to reelect him. Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who attended the premiere, noted intense interest in the film could further expose Trump.
