During a recent episode of his “Superfly” podcast with co-host David Spade, veteran comedian Dana Carvey discussed the difficulty of mimicking Elon Musk. Carvey noted that recreating Musk’s distinct accent is not an easy assignment.
“I can’t do Elon Musk very well,” Carvey said. He defined Musk’s speech as a complicated blend of linguistic influences, saying that the accent was a mix of South African, Canadian, and Pennsylvania dialects with traces of Australian and British tones.
The controversy arose from Carvey’s recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) cold open on November 9, which depicted Musk donning a “dark MAGA” hat and commenting on Donald Trump’s 2024 election triumph. Musk promptly responded to the performance on his social media site, X.
Musk slammed the impression, saying, “Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey.” He claimed that SNL has been “dying slowly” and getting “increasingly out of touch with reality.” He suggested that the show’s cast was dissatisfied with Trump’s election victory.
Despite the criticism, Carvey remains active on SNL. He just returned to the show to play President Joe Biden, having previously appeared from 1986 to 1993 as an original cast member. His most recent performance occurred on November 16, when he mocked a meeting between Biden and Trump in the Oval Office.
During the podcast, Carvey joked about a personal SNL ritual. He disclosed his post-show practice of skipping under the bleachers during the goodnight portion, noting that “skipping feels good compared to walking or even running.”
Fans may look forward to Carvey’s next Saturday Night Live appearance in December. Paul Mescal will host the show’s episode on December 7th, with Shaboozey as the musical guest.
The comedian’s ongoing appearance on SNL displays his enduring brilliance and ability to negotiate the ever-changing world of political satire.
