A new film will defy traditional societal standards, starring Australian actor Xavier Samuel and Indian actress Sonal Sehgal in a stunning story about love and personal independence.
The film, “The Great Departure,” delves into the complexity of patriarchy through a unique road trip scenario set in India. Currently in post-production, the project grew out of Sehgal’s personal experiences during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Sehgal, who penned the screenplay, found inspiration in her own life. “I grew up in a society with deep-rooted patriarchal structures,” she told me. “Despite this, my parents always encouraged my independence.” This personal trip formed the basis of the film’s narrative.
The story revolves around two characters from diverse origins who meet by happenstance in Varanasi and embark on a transforming trip that challenges social norms. Xavier Samuel, who has appeared in films such as “Blonde” and “Love and Friendship,” was immediately drawn to the script’s emotional depth.
“I was deeply moved by the humanity of the story,” Samuel expressed. “It offers an unflinching look at life in India, especially from a woman’s perspective.” His character provides a comprehensive examination of cross-cultural connections and personal development.
For KVR Productions, the film is more than just a creative endeavor. The production house’s leader, Arvind Reddy, stressed their dedication to gender equality. “We ensured gender parity across all production departments,” Reddy explained, emphasizing the film’s progressive approach.
French filmmaker Pierre Filmon, who directed the picture, commended the collaborative attitude of the crew. “From cast and crew to support staff, everyone worked together seamlessly to bring this script to life,” he told me.
The picture is a watershed event in contemporary world cinema, providing a new viewpoint on society dynamics and personal connections. “The Great Departure” promises to be a thought-provoking cinematic experience as it weaves together human experiences and greater social comments.
