Actor Josh Brolin recently revealed a behind-the-scenes anecdote from the 2007 crime movie “American Gangster” that nearly resulted in a violent altercation with co-star Denzel Washington. In a candid interview with Graham Bensinger, Brolin recalled a stressful moment on set that strained the limits of their professional relationship.
The incident occurred while Brolin was filming a scene in which he played Detective Trupo, who was investigating heroin dealer Frank Lucas, played by Washington. According to Brolin, tensions arose when Washington arrived late to the set and appeared distracted while changing the scene structure.
“Denzel was a little late to the set,” Brolin explained. “He showed me the lines and rearranged how we would do the scene.” The situation swiftly grew heated when Brolin reached out for assistance with his lines. Washington reacted strongly, telling Brolin, “Don’t ever put your hand on me.”
Brolin confessed that he briefly believed they were about to fight. “I’m going to spar with Denzel Washington. “This is crazy,” he recalls thinking. However, he eventually realized that Washington was entirely immersed in his performance, emulating Frank Lucas.
The tension was short-lived. The actors swiftly overcame their quarrel, with Washington eventually assisting Brolin with his lines. At a later function, Washington embraced Brolin warmly, implying that any earlier disagreements had been forgotten.
The revelation comes as Brolin promotes his new memoir, “From Under the Truck,” which delves into his Hollywood career and personal life. The novel explores relationships, addiction, love, and parenting.
“American Gangster” was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Lymari Nadal. The picture remains a significant cooperation between two renowned actors who have retained professional respect for one another.
Washington and Scott will reconnect for the upcoming “Gladiator II” picture, illustrating that professional obstacles in the film industry are often transient.
