Director Kevin Smith confirmed plans for a sequel to his 1999 religious comedy “Dogma” at the 2016 Vulture Festival. Original stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are expected to return in significant parts.
Smith directly addressed potential fan skepticism, noting that some may hesitate to revisit the cult favorite. “Some people will say, ‘Don’t f—ing touch it. “You’ll ruin it,” Smith warned. “And I’m here to tell you: I will.”
The project follows a meaningful step in which the film’s long-standing rights concerns were resolved. Previously owned by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the rights have been purchased by an undisclosed business. This accomplishment paves the way for a sequel, a 25th anniversary theatrical re-release, and a new 4K home media edition.
Smith expressed confidence in Affleck and Damon’s roles, promising more than a cameo. “The only way we get a ‘Dogma’ sequel made is if they’re there,” stated the actor. The filmmaker used his connection to “Good Will Hunting” as leverage for their participation.
The original “Dogma” starred Alan Rickman, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Linda Fiorentino, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, and Alanis Morissette as God. Despite causing controversy among religious groups upon its premiere, the picture was positively received by critics and viewers.
This announcement represents a potential return to form for Smith, whose latest efforts have centered on smaller-scale works and sequels to his previous films. Damon has already indicated a desire to return to the “Dogma” universe, appearing briefly in the 2019 film “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.”
Smith described the future film as a companion rather than a traditional sequel, implying that viewers should expect a new take on the original’s challenging topics.
