Ana Endara, a well-known Panamanian documentary director, has made an impressive crossover to fiction with her debut feature film, Beloved Tropic. The emotional drama is gaining international acclaim, marking a watershed moment for Central American cinema.
The film features Chilean actress Paulina García, noted for her Silver Bear-winning performance in Gloria. Beloved Tropic is the story of an upper-class woman with dementia and her pregnant immigrant caretaker. Set in Panama City, the film explores issues of caregiving, identity, and the unforeseen ties that bring people together.
Beloved Tropic has received widespread accolades at international film festivals. It was the first Panamanian film to get the Arthouse Cinema Award from Cinélatino Toulouse’s Cinéma in Construction. The film has since played at prominent festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), San Sebastián’s Horizontes Latinos section, and Rome and Havana festivals competitions.
The film’s distribution has also drawn attention. FiGa Films, a Miami-based distributor led by Sandro Fiorin, supports the project. “I’m honored to work with Ana Endara, a director I’ve admired for years,” Fiorin told reporters. “Her talent and precision as a filmmaker are extraordinary.”
Pacifica Grey has distribution rights in several Central American nations, including Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Marcelo Quesada, the company’s creator, sees the film as a regional accomplishment. “This film highlights the growing power of Central American storytelling,” Quesada told reporters. It’s vital for these stories to reach local audiences.”
Endara is no stranger to critical accolades. Her prior documentaries, including Reinas and For Your Peace of Mind, Make Your Museum, established her as a prominent figure in Panamanian filmmaking. She is a member of a new generation of filmmakers, with Ana Elena Tejera and Arianne Benedetti, who are reshaping the region’s film landscape.
Jenny Navarrete, who starred in The Other Son, plays the caregiver in the film. The actors and Garca add depth to a narrative about parenting, caregiving, and the complexities of human relationships.
As Beloved Tropic prepares to make its market debut at Ventana Sur in Uruguay, its success demonstrates Central American cinema’s growing complexity and worldwide relevance.
