Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of the globally acclaimed manga My Hero Academia, has revealed that he is working on a new project following the conclusion of his decade-long series. The final edition of My Hero Academia, edition 42, was released on December 4, 2024, signaling the end of an era for fans.
In a recent interview, Horikoshi discussed the obstacles of moving forward following the great success of My Hero Academia. “I feel really lucky about the success of MHA, so I know there’s a lot of pressure around my next move,” he remarked in an interview related to a Marvel partnership. Horikoshi pondered, completely focusing on the artwork for his next project and delegating the story to another writer. However, his editor pushed him to resume full creative control.
“I was thinking of committing myself to simply drawing my next project and letting someone else write the story,” Horikoshi told me. “But my editor advised me, ‘It will be better if you do it all yourself.'” Taking this advice to heart, the manga artist has begun designing the new series, creating early storyboards and character concepts.
Horikoshi makes the statement as he nears the end of a pivotal chapter in his career. My Hero Academia lasted ten years in Weekly Shonen Jump, inspiring a massively popular anime series, multiple feature films, and collaborations. The anime’s sixth season was completed on October 12, 2024, and the eighth season, which has already been confirmed as the final installment, is currently in development.
Although specifics concerning Horikoshi’s future manga remain unknown, he actively promotes My Hero Academia. He recently submitted special illustrations to major Japanese newspapers commemorating the series, including fan favorites like Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and Shoto Todoroki.
Fans hungry for more from Horikoshi will have to wait a little longer for details on his forthcoming project. However, expectations are high given his reputation for captivating storytelling and artistic brilliance. Updates on the new comic are expected in the following months, confirming Horikoshi’s place as a central player in the manga community.
