The Oscar-nominated film “Emilia Pérez” is embroiled in controversy after its director, Jacques Audiard, publicly severed professional ties with lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón due to inflammatory social media posts.
Audiard, himself nominated for Best Director, spoke candidly to Deadline Hollywood about his decision. “What Karla Sofía said is inexcusable,” he stated, describing her social media comments as “absolutely hateful.”
The controversy comes at a critical moment for the film, which has made history with 13 Academy Award nominations – the most ever for a non-English language film. The Netflix-produced crime musical is competing in major categories, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Gascón, who became the first openly transgender performer to receive an Oscar nomination.
The recently discovered social media posts contained discriminatory remarks about people of color, Muslims, and diversity initiatives. Gascón’s comments included controversial statements about the Academy Awards, comparing the ceremony to “an Afro-Korean festival” and a “Black Lives Matter demonstration.”
Netflix is reportedly distancing itself from Gascón, with sources indicating she will no longer participate in upcoming awards season events in Los Angeles. Co-star Zoe Saldaña, a frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress, condemned the remarks, emphasizing her commitment to inclusivity and equity.
Gascón has attempted to address the backlash through public statements and a CNN en Español interview. While expressing remorse, she has also claimed to be the victim of a “campaign of hate and misinformation.” Audiard rejected this narrative, saying, “She’s really playing the victim… It’s as if she thought that words don’t hurt.”
The controversy adds complexity to the film, which was already facing criticism in Mexico about representation. Audiard defended the work, describing it as “an opera, not a criticism of anything about Mexico.”
As the March 2 Academy Awards approach, the film’s campaign remains uncertain. Audiard expressed sadness about the situation, particularly concerned about how the controversy might impact the hardworking crew and fellow artists.
The incident highlights ongoing discussions about accountability and representation in the film industry, with potential significant implications for the film’s Oscar prospects.
