Woody Harrelson has addressed speculation about why he did not appear in season three of HBO’s The White Lotus, confirming that his decision was related to scheduling and not tied to cast compensation policies.
The actor had been in talks to join the series in a leading role and was considered for either Rick, now played by Walton Goggins, or Frank, played by Sam Rockwell. Harrelson said he had committed to the project but was forced to step away when production timelines changed.
“I was set to do The White Lotus and very excited,” Harrelson told The Daily Beast. “Unfortunately, their production schedule shifted and conflicted with a pre-planned family vacation, forcing me to make an extremely hard decision.”
Responding to earlier reports that his absence was tied to salary parity rules among cast members, Harrelson made it clear that was not a factor. “Things must be meant to be though because I couldn’t have done as fantastic a job as Sam, who is killing it,” he said.
In the current season, Goggins plays Rick, a guest at the resort in Koh Samui, Thailand, who is secretly pursuing a man he believes killed his father. Rockwell’s character Frank is brought into the effort as Rick’s close friend.
Other cast members include Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Aimee Lou Wood, and Natasha Rothwell. The season was filmed on location in Thailand. In previous interviews, Wood said that living on set for an extended period felt disorienting and led her to question the separation between herself and her character.
Production on season three has drawn attention for both its casting choices and narrative direction. This installment moves the setting from Italy to Southeast Asia, continuing the show’s format of placing new characters in luxury environments marked by tension, secrecy, and shifting allegiances.
