Director Francis Lawrence stunned Hall H with the first extended look at The Long Walk, revealing a brutally censored kill scene and locking in a September 12 theatrical release for the Stephen King adaptation. The trailer introduces 50 teenagers forced to keep a four‑mile‑per‑hour pace under rifle sights, with Mark Hamill’s gravel‑voiced Major explaining the contest’s single‑survivor stakes.

Lawrence screened 22 minutes, including a blackout moment where a soldier shoots a seizing walker—footage intense enough that moderators dimmed hall monitors at Lionsgate’s request. Cast members Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Garrett Wareing joined Hamill onstage, describing how they logged up to 15 miles per shooting day to stay in character. Wareing slipped phones inside socks to track steps, earning daily “Happy Death Day” buttons whenever a character fell.

Principal photography ran chronologically last summer around Winnipeg and Garson, Manitoba, allowing performances to mirror escalating exhaustion. Cinematographer Jo Willems used rolling‑crane shots to keep the camera moving with the walkers, while composer Jeremiah Fraites blended drum corps snares with ambient drone for what Lawrence called “a heartbeat you can’t escape.”

Screenwriter JT Mollner’s script remains largely faithful to King’s 1979 novel, written under the Richard Bachman pseudonym, but shifts the setting to 2033 to “echo today’s winner‑take‑all culture,” Lawrence said. Hamill portrays the Major as “a ringmaster masking war trauma,” and Charlie Plummer, Tut Nyuot and Ben Wang round out the weary field of competitors. Producer Roy Lee hinted that Lionsgate sees franchise potential should audiences connect with what he called “King’s bleakest game.”

Lionsgate will pair the film’s September opening with an R‑rated IMAX rollout and a same‑day Dolby Cinema bow, betting that visceral sound design amplifies the constant gunfire threat. Analysts note that the dystopian premise could fill the gap left by The Hunger Games era for older teens, while online chatter praises Hamill’s harsh turn yet questions whether the novel’s grim ending will remain intact.
