Warner Bros. and New Line are in early discussions with filmmaker Zach Cregger about a prequel to his new horror hit “Weapons” centered on the backstory of Aunt Gladys, the film’s breakout villain, according to reporting first shared by The Hollywood Reporter. No deals are in place, and the talks are described as exploratory. The concept draws on a Gladys-focused chapter Cregger trimmed for length during development.
Aunt Gladys, portrayed by Amy Madigan, figures prominently in the mystery that drives “Weapons,” which follows the mass disappearance of third-graders in a Pennsylvania town. Coverage of the film’s plot identifies Gladys as a malevolent, witch-like figure who manipulates others through ritual and coercion, a characterization that has fueled audience interest in her origins.
The prequel chatter arrives as “Weapons” posts strong initial business. The film opened on August 8 and led domestic charts with about $42.5 million over its first weekend, contributing to Warner Bros.’ late-summer streak at the box office. The performance has encouraged speculation about expanding the property, though sources caution that development conversations do not guarantee a greenlight or production timetable.
Cregger’s near-term calendar complicates the picture. He is set to direct a new “Resident Evil” feature for Sony with a U.S. theatrical date of September 18, 2026, and has discussed having additional ideas in the “Weapons” universe that he does not plan to pursue immediately. Those commitments suggest any Aunt Gladys project would need to slot behind existing obligations.
Industry write-ups note that the prequel idea would likely expand material cut from the “Weapons” script into a full narrative, leveraging the character’s momentum while retaining the original’s tone. With the studio conversation still in its early phase and no casting or creative deals signed, the focal points remain audience response to the current release and scheduling latitude for Cregger and his partners.
