Wagner Moura will receive the Zurich Film Festival’s Golden Eye at this year’s edition, with organizers citing the Brazilian star’s body of work and his acclaimed turn in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent. The festival said Moura will travel to Zurich to accept the honorary prize and present the film as a gala screening. The 21st ZFF runs September 25 to October 5 in Zurich.
The honor follows a breakthrough year for Moura on the international awards circuit. In May he won best actor at Cannes for The Secret Agent, while Mendonça Filho took best director, positioning the 1970s-set political thriller as a major season contender before fall festivals. The film, set in Recife under Brazil’s military regime, centers on an academic on the run and has been slated for high-profile stops including the New York Film Festival.
ZFF’s Golden Eye has recognized a mix of global stars and European stalwarts in recent years. The festival has previously feted figures including Mads Mikkelsen and Pamela Anderson with the award, which sits alongside ZFF’s competitive Golden Eye trophies presented on closing night. Moura’s selection extends the event’s recent emphasis on international screen leaders with active careers across film and television.
Best known worldwide for portraying Pablo Escobar in Narcos and for recent roles in Civil War and Shining Girls, Moura has also directed and produced, earning strong notices at home for his debut feature Marighella. The Secret Agent marks a return to Brazilian cinema and language, and his reunion with Mendonça Filho has drawn notice for mixing political memory with genre elements.
Festival organizers have set mid-September for the full lineup announcement and ticket sales; the Golden Eye ceremony is scheduled during the 11-day event and will be paired with an onstage conversation and the gala presentation of The Secret Agent. Zurich’s industry program and red-carpet premieres are expected to draw filmmakers and distributors ahead of the European awards corridor.
