Matt Reeves Finishes The Batman Part II Script, Sets Spring Shoot

Reeves says filming is aiming for spring 2026 and a 2027 release as The Penguin bridges the gap and the sequel stays in DC’s Elseworlds lane.

Matt Reeves says his sequel to the 2022 hit is finally moving. On the Emmys red carpet, the filmmaker confirmed the script for The Batman Part II is complete and that production is gearing up, with Robert Pattinson already having read a tightly guarded draft delivered in a locked pouch. Reeves said Pattinson was “very excited” by a story that pushes Bruce Wayne in ways “not done before,” adding that the team is entering prep to shoot in the spring.

The studio has targeted an October 1, 2027 theatrical release, after multiple date shifts tied to industry stoppages and the director’s extended writing process. In a recent shareholder communication, the company also flagged spring 2026 as the window to begin principal photography. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has publicly urged patience, arguing that a five-year gap between films is hardly unusual and emphasizing the importance of waiting for a script the director believes in.

Reeves’ update arrives as his Gotham “crime saga” continues to expand on television. The Penguin, led by Colin Farrell, serves as a bridge between the first and second films, and conversations are underway about a possible second season following the show’s strong reception. Still, the feature sequel will chart its own course within DC’s Elseworlds banner, separate from the main DC universe overseen by Gunn.

One expectation the director tried to temper involves a breakout TV antagonist. Reeves said Cristin Milioti, fresh off an Emmy for playing Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, will not appear in Part II because the movie’s script was already far along during the show’s run. He praised both the performance and the character’s creation while leaving the door open to future use.

Reeves also described the secrecy measures around the screenplay as essential to preserving a mystery-driven narrative. “Protecting the secrets of the movie is super important,” he said, recounting the FaceTime that followed Pattinson’s first read. The measured reveals suggest a sequel that deepens the detective angle of the first film while maintaining firm separation from the timeline and tone of DC’s core slate.
