Quentin Tarantino is stepping back in front of the camera for Only What We Carry, joining an ensemble led by Simon Pegg, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Sofia Boutella in a feature directed by Jamie Adams. The project, which recently wrapped a six-day improvised shoot in Deauville, France, is described as the filmmaker’s most substantial screen role in years and marks a rare return to acting after a decade centered on directing and writing. IndieWire first reported the casting.
Industry notices say the micro-budget production embraced Adams’ fast, improvisation-driven method, with scenes developed on location and a small crew working at speed. Trade reports indicate Tarantino’s character is named John Percy, with the film now in post-production and no release date yet announced. Separate listings suggest singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine appears among the supporting cast.
The move arrives as Tarantino recalibrates his long-stated plan to make one final feature. He has abandoned The Movie Critic and indicated he is not rushing into a tenth film, while exploring other mediums including a stage play. Recent interviews and coverage have also tied him to The Adventures of Cliff Booth as writer-producer, with David Fincher directing a spinoff set in the world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Those shifts create space for on-screen work without contradicting his public comments about ending his directing career on his own terms.
Adams, known for rapid, actor-led shoots, has previously worked this way on improvised features and often casts across music and film—an approach that aligns with Only What We Carry’s compact schedule and eclectic lineup. For Tarantino, whose past acting credits range from Pulp Fiction to cameo appearances in his own films, the role offers a different path back to audiences while attention continues to gather around whatever form his final directorial effort may take.
