Christopher Nolan Calls The Odyssey “Foundational” As IMAX Epic Takes Shape

Christopher Nolan describes his Homer adaptation The Odyssey as “foundational” and packed with “a bit of everything,” as massive IMAX shoots, theater upgrades and year-early sellouts signal one of his most ambitious projects to date.

Christopher Nolan has described his upcoming film The Odyssey as a story with “a bit of everything in it,” presenting the Homer adaptation as a kind of template for cinematic storytelling at a time when the industry is searching for large-scale theatrical events.

In a recent interview, Nolan said producer Emma Thomas called the poem “foundational,” and he agreed, arguing that the source material “contains all stories” and that he was drawn to areas of film culture that still feel unexplored. He cited the mythic adventure movies he grew up on, including the work of Ray Harryhausen, and said he had never seen that tradition treated with the weight and seriousness of a major studio production built around IMAX photography.

The production itself reflects that ambition. Nolan revealed that he shot over 2 million feet of film on the project and spent roughly four months at sea, putting the actors playing Odysseus’ crew on real water locations to convey how punishing ancient sea voyages would have been in an uncharted world. The Odyssey has been filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, using newly developed, quieter units that allow sync sound, making it the first Hollywood feature shot fully in the large-format system while also expanding the technical toolkit for future productions.

Exhibitors have responded ahead of release. Select 15/70 IMAX screenings scheduled for the film’s opening weekend in July 2026 sold out a year in advance, with some tickets reportedly resold online for several hundred dollars, and venue managers describing the pre-sale as far beyond their usual lead times. Chains in the United States are installing new 70mm IMAX systems and upgrading existing auditoriums to IMAX with Laser specifically with The Odyssey in mind, lifting the global number of screens capable of projecting the film in its preferred format from about 30 to a figure closer to 40.

Nolan has said he is working closely with IMAX engineers on new technology for the film and praised ongoing innovation in celluloid-based formats, calling the company’s technical team “brilliant minds doing extraordinary work.” The Odyssey is set for release on July 17, 2026, as his second collaboration with Universal after the success of Oppenheimer, which approached $1 billion worldwide. Specific plot details and much of the reported ensemble cast remain officially unconfirmed, yet the scale of the shoot, the hardware investments and the unusually early ticket demand suggest that Nolan’s interpretation of Homer is already shaping exhibition plans well before audiences see a full trailer.
