Cara Buono’s blood-soaked bathroom brawl with a Demogorgon in the new season of “Stranger Things” has turned a long-running supporting character into the face of the show’s latest viral moment. A clip of Karen Wheeler stabbing the creature with a shattered wine bottle has surged past nine million views on X, as fans hail the Hawkins mom as a late-breaking action hero.
The sequence appears in Season 5, Episode 2, when Vecna sends a Demogorgon to the Wheeler home to abduct young Holly. Cornered in the house and fresh from the bathtub, Karen grabs her wine bottle, smashes it on the counter and hurls herself at the monster to protect her daughter. Both parents end up badly injured, and Holly is dragged into the Upside Down, but Karen’s description of the attacker gives Nancy and Mike a critical clue about their enemy.
Buono has played Karen as a tipsy, distracted suburban parent since the series began, and she never expected the character to be handed a set-piece fight. She told Netflix’s Tudum that reading the script was “satisfying” and emotional, calling it Karen’s “big hero moment” and saying the character finally goes “full mama bear.” In another recent interview, Buono said she leaned into Karen’s instability, even describing her privately as “a functioning alcoholic” whose drinking masks a deep sense of isolation.
Behind the scenes, the shoot was physically demanding. Buono increased her gym time and worked with the stunt team on intricate choreography that involved slipping through a soaked hallway, wrestling a stunt performer in a Demogorgon suit and repeatedly driving the prop bottle into a rigged board to mimic piercing flesh. She has joked that she wanted the attack to feel like “mom adrenaline,” not a polished Navy SEAL takedown.
Viewers responded with enthusiasm and some debate. One widely shared X post praised Karen for fighting while drunk, powerless and armed only with glass, calling her a “hero,” a sentiment echoed across fan threads that credit her with doing more damage than soldiers managed in earlier seasons. Buono quote-tweeted the praise with a deadpan explanation of her training regimen: “opening jars no one else in the house could open,” a line that itself went viral. Some fans argue the sequence softens the Demogorgon’s menace, pointing to “plot armor” and a perceived power drop for the creature, yet many still describe the scene as a cathartic payoff for a character long stuck on the sidelines.
For Buono, the moment also marks a farewell. She has called returning for the fifth and final season “deeply emotional,” likening it to coming home after nearly a decade of work in Hawkins. Volume 1 of Season 5 is streaming now, with the second batch of episodes due on Christmas Day and the finale set for New Year’s Eve, positioning Karen Wheeler’s wine-bottle stand as one of the last new images in the show’s cultural run.
