Tiffany Haddish says Girls Trip 2 is moving toward cameras at last, with the comedy sequel expected to begin shooting next summer in a still-secret international setting. At a Las Vegas appearance this week, Haddish said the cast has a production window lined up and that the follow-up will take its four friends to an “exotic” place audiences rarely see in studio comedies. She said she does not yet know the exact country, but the plan is to head somewhere outside the usual tourist circuit.
The film will bring Haddish back together with Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith, reviving the “Flossy Posse” nearly a decade after the 2017 original. That first Girls Trip followed lifelong friends who reunited for New Orleans’ Essence Music Festival, and it became a box-office sleeper that helped reenergize R-rated ensemble comedies and widened the lane for Black-led studio projects.
Story plans for the sequel have been teased over the past few years. Co-writer Tracy Oliver has said the new trip is built around Ghana’s Afrochella, now branded AfroFuture, a major music and culture festival that could shift the characters into a global party scene while keeping the focus on friendship. Producer Will Packer has also confirmed that a script is finished and that the team’s main hurdle has been synchronizing the stars’ schedules.
Those timing issues were compounded by the pandemic. Hall has noted that the cast’s busy slates pushed early plans back, and that COVID-era limits made it hard to stage a travel-heavy comedy that depends on crowds, nightlife and spontaneous energy. With restrictions long lifted and the actors’ calendars aligning, the sequel is positioned to move from development to production, with the expectation that it will echo the original’s freewheeling chemistry in a new cultural backdrop.
No studio has announced a precise start date, release timing or official logline. Haddish’s comments, however, are the most concrete signal yet that Girls Trip 2 is nearing a shoot after years of intermittent updates.
