King Charles III’s New Year Honours list for 2026 has awarded actor and activist Idris Elba a knighthood for services to young people and named performer Cynthia Erivo a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to music and drama, according to the official list released by the Cabinet Office on Dec. 29.
The government said 1,157 people across the UK will receive honours this cycle, with a stated emphasis on local service and community impact. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the list “celebrates the very best of Britain,” praising recipients for work that “strengthen[s] communities and change[s] lives.”
Elba, listed as Dr Idrissa Akuna Elba, becomes a Knight Bachelor. The citation in the published roll credits him as an activist, actor and musician recognised for work with young people. Elba has tied much of his recent public advocacy to youth safety and opportunity, including efforts linked to knife-crime prevention through the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife.
Erivo, described in the honours roll as an actor, singer, producer and author, received an MBE for services to music and drama. The official list places her among recipients drawn from entertainment, sport, public service and voluntary work.
Other high-profile awards include a damehood for writer and performer Meera Syal, plus honours for Olympic ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. The government also highlighted recognition for women’s sport figures, including national team coach Sarina Wiegman receiving an honorary damehood and several players receiving CBEs and MBEs. The Cabinet Office said ethnic minority representation at higher awards rose from 7% last year to 14% on this list.
The honours system continues to draw criticism over patronage, transparency and the “Empire” branding attached to many awards. A House of Commons committee has previously recorded concerns about fairness and the selection process, while public debate regularly resurfaces when prominent figures accept, decline or return honours.
Investitures will take place in 2026 at royal residences, and the government says members of the public can nominate candidates through the honours system.
