Netflix has expanded the North American theatrical rollout for the final episode of Stranger Things, adding venues after demand surged for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day fan screenings timed to the finale’s global streaming premiere.
In an Instagram post Monday, co-creator Ross Duffer said “over 1.1 million” people have already RSVPed for the cinema events and that “more than 3,500 showtimes across 620+ theaters are completely full,” signaling near sell-outs at many major chains as the date approaches.
Netflix first announced the event in October, framing it as a limited engagement in “more than 500 theaters” across the United States and Canada, with the first screenings beginning Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. PT, the same moment the episode lands on the service worldwide. The company directed fans to ST5Finale.com for participating locations and seat reservations.
The finale, titled “The Rightside Up,” runs 2 hours and 5 minutes, and Netflix has billed the big-screen option as a way to watch the episode with theater sound and a crowd. The Duffer brothers said in a statement that seeing the last chapter “on the big screen” with “a room full of fans” felt like the right sendoff.
Ticketing has varied by exhibitor. Some outlets have described reservations as free seats paired with a required food-and-drink credit, while other listings have treated the purchase as a concession voucher attached to the reservation. Netflix-owned theaters in Los Angeles and New York have used RSVP-based attendance for select showings, according to event details published earlier this month.
The theatrical plan arrives after Netflix split the fifth and final season into multiple drops: the first four episodes debuted Nov. 26, with episodes 5–7 set for Dec. 25 ahead of the stand-alone finale on Dec. 31.
