Euphoria ended Sunday night not with a recovery, but a funeral. Shortly after the finale aired, creator Sam Levinson confirmed that the show will not return for a fourth season, making the episode the series finale. The closing chapter delivered what the series had been building toward since its 2019 premiere: the death of Rue Bennett.
After Maddy revealed to drug boss Alamo that Rue had been cooperating with the DEA, Alamo gave her fentanyl-laced painkillers under the guise of treating her pain. She overdosed, and Ali — her longtime sponsor, played by Colman Domingo — discovered her dead on his couch. The episode then pivots to Ali hunting down and killing Alamo in a duel, exacting justice for her murder.
The death followed a carefully constructed trap. The episode opens with Rue escaping from Wayne after Faye screams to wake him mid-robbery, with Rue grabbing a wrench and making a run for it. Alamo, aware she has become an informant, then offers her what he frames as relief — the same bottle that kills her.
Before she dies, Rue experiences a dream sequence in which Fezco escapes prison and reunites with her in a field. It serves as a tribute to the late Angus Cloud, who played Fezco in the show’s first two seasons and died in 2023.
Levinson defended the decision in a post-show segment: “It felt like an honest ending. The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it.” Zendaya, who won two Emmy Awards across the show’s earlier seasons, had signaled the ending months earlier. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, she said of the series: “Euphoria cracked my heart open. Rue taught me so much about life… I owe so much to that show.”

For the surviving characters, the finale offers fragmented closure. Cassie doubles down on her OnlyFans ambitions and plans to help other women build their platforms. Jules, largely absent from the finale, dedicates a painting to Rue. Lexi declines to work with Cassie. Maddy, relieved after Alamo’s death, befriends Bishop. The deaths of both Rue and Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs — who was killed by a rattlesnake the previous episode — leave the show’s world fundamentally altered, its ensemble scattered, its central moral reckoning complete.
