Crunchyroll and Aniplex have moved “Solo Leveling: Beyond the System” into production, unveiling the theatrical anime film during a panel at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles. The feature will pick up directly after the events of “Arise From the Shadows,” the second season of the hit series, and marks the franchise’s first original theatrical story rather than a compilation of existing episodes.
A-1 Pictures, the studio behind “Sword Art Online,” returns to animate the project after handling both prior seasons. Tao Tajima is directing and also taking on duties as director of photography, editor and colorist, while character designer Tomoko Sudo reprises her role from the series. Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C Media, Kakao Piccoma and Crunchyroll are producing together, reflecting the sprawling multimedia operation that has grown around the property since its debut as a web novel a decade ago.
Plot specifics remain closely guarded. Crunchyroll released only a teaser key visual featuring protagonist Sung Jinwoo and a short promotional concept video timed to the convention, which runs through Sunday at the Los Angeles Convention Center. No release date or additional cast information has surfaced yet.
“Solo Leveling” began in 2016 as a web novel by Chugong before its webtoon adaptation, illustrated by the late DUBU of Redice Studio and later continued by h-goon, turned it into a global phenomenon that has drawn over 650 million page views on the Japanese platform Piccoma. The story follows Jinwoo, introduced as the weakest of the “Hunters” who battle monsters spilling out of interdimensional Gates, as he gains a mysterious system that allows him to grow stronger with each encounter.
The anime adaptation premiered in January 2024, with a second season following a year later and a compilation film, “Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-,” screening in select North American theaters in December 2024. A third season is expected by the end of 2026, and a live-action Korean series is also in development. The franchise’s reach extends into gaming as well, with Netmarble’s “Solo Leveling: Arise” and its follow-up “Arise Overdrive” already available across multiple platforms.
