John Irvin, the British director who turned John le Carré’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” into a landmark television event and later brought unflinching realism to the Vietnam War with “Hamburger Hill,” died Aug. 11 at his sister-in-law’s home in the United Kingdom. He was 86. His producer, Claire Evans, confirmed the death, which came peacefully with family present. No cause was disclosed.

Irvin built a career defined by range rather than repetition, moving between war epics, horror, romance and action across more than 30 films and five decades. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on May 7, 1940, and trained at the London Film School before cutting his teeth on documentaries, including “Mafia No!,” a portrait of an Italian anti-mob activist that earned him his first BAFTA nomination.

His defining achievement arrived in 1979, when he directed the seven-part BBC adaptation of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” starring Alec Guinness as spymaster George Smiley. Le Carré later called the series his favorite screen version of his own work. Guinness, reflecting on their collaboration, praised Irvin as a director with the nerve to commit fully behind the camera. The production won two BAFTAs from six nominations and drew an Emmy nod for outstanding limited series.

That success opened the door to Hollywood, where Irvin directed Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger in “The Dogs of War,” steered Fred Astaire through the horror film “Ghost Story,” and gave Arnold Schwarzenegger one of his early star vehicles in “Raw Deal.” His 1987 film “Hamburger Hill,” following American soldiers through a brutal, real battle in Vietnam, remains regarded as one of the more accurate depictions of that conflict on screen, anchored by a young cast that included Don Cheadle, Dylan McDermott and Courtney B. Vance.

Irvin’s wife, Sophie, died of cancer in 1991. He is survived by their three children and two grandchildren. Colleagues and fans have already begun sharing memories online, recalling a filmmaker who treated newcomers on set with the same generosity he brought to his biggest stars.
