Speaking on Dale Brisby’s “Rodeo Time” podcast, the writer and creator gave a blunt answer when asked for an update on the project, which was first floated in February 2021 and centers on the real Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. “There’s never going to be one,” Sheridan said. “I would never fictionalize that ranch.” He explained the decision comes down to protecting the people who actually work there. “So now I’m trivializing and fictionalizing something where real people work, and they raise their families there, and I could never do that to them,” he said, adding that he could never do that to the cowboys who dedicated themselves to the operation.
Sheridan purchased the historic ranch for $350 million in 2022 after its previous owner, Anne Windfohr Marion, died. He has described feeling a personal responsibility to the property and its history that goes beyond typical creative license. Rather than building a fictional drama around the ranch, Sheridan revealed he has already assembled an alternative: a standalone cut using existing footage of Jefferson White’s character, Jimmy Hurdstrom, who was sent to work at the Four Sixes during the fourth season of “Yellowstone.” Strung together, he said, those scenes “make its own perfect little movie,” tracing Jimmy’s transformation from a misfit cowhand into a respected hand on the ranch.
The announcement ends years of speculation that trailed the character’s storyline, including an official synopsis Paramount released describing the ranch’s deep roots in West Texas history. White had signaled uncertainty about the project as recently as this past winter, telling reporters he had no news to share but was still hopeful.
The reversal comes as Sheridan prepares his eventual departure from Paramount, where his television deal runs through 2028 before he transitions to NBCUniversal. Other entries in his sprawling franchise, including “Y: Marshals” and the upcoming Beth-and-Rip spinoff “The Dutton Ranch,” continue moving forward even as “6666” rides into the sunset for good.
