Tony Dalton’s final scene on “Sugar” left him unable to move for two days, the result of an hours-long desert fight sequence against Colin Farrell that ended with Dalton’s character, corrupt sheriff Ray Vega, dead at the hands of Farrell’s private investigator, John Sugar.
Dalton, who plays Vega across the Apple TV+ series’ second season, described the sequence as the most physically demanding work of the shoot, staged largely inside an overturned Ford Bronco during the final days of production. “That was crazy. That was insane,” Dalton said, calling the fight the last thing filmed for the season and adding that he was grateful for the timing given how depleted the work left him afterward.
The choreography grew intense enough that Dalton accidentally struck Farrell during filming. He said he checked on his co-star mid-scene, only for Farrell to wave him off and push to keep going rather than pause the take. Dalton estimated he landed the blow once or twice over the course of shooting, describing Farrell as entirely unbothered in the moment despite the contact.
By the time Dalton got home that night, bruising had spread across both sides of his body, damage significant enough that he initially considered sending Farrell a photo before deciding against it, reasoning his co-star had likely absorbed comparable damage.
Dalton built Vega, a former Marine turned corrupt Los Angeles sheriff, around Denzel Washington’s morally compromised officer in “Training Day,” describing the character as functioning almost as Sugar’s inverse.
Where Sugar operates from a fundamentally hopeful view of people, Dalton said Vega rejects that worldview entirely, refusing to extend the same faith in humanity his adversary carries throughout the series. The character’s death arrives after a season-long conflict involving a missing boxer’s brother, a citywide fentanyl trafficking operation and a public housing fraud scheme that ties both men together.
