Andrew Scott Returns to the Role That Made Him a Stage Star, This Time on Film

Andrew Scott will step back into Sea Wall this fall, reprising the solo role Simon Stephens wrote for him nearly two decades ago for a feature film shot live during a run of stage performances at Off-Broadway’s Studio Seaview. Producers are billing the project as an industry first: rather than adapt the play for cinema, the crew will film Scott performing it in front of a live audience across 19 shows running October 16 through 30, folding backstage footage and crowd reactions into the finished movie.

Tina Satter, the Peabody Award winner behind Broadway’s Is This a Room?, directs both the stage run and the film. Paul Yee serves as director of photography, with Parker Lutz advising on production design. Seaview, Spencer Ross, Steven Demmler and Linden Entertainment are producing the stage engagement, while Wessex Grove and ATG Productions serve as executive producers.

Stephens wrote the 30-minute monologue for Scott in 2008 under unusual circumstances. Flooding had damaged the lighting rig at London’s Bush Theatre, so artistic director Josie Rourke commissioned a piece built to run in natural daylight. Stephens delivered it in three weeks. The result follows Alex, a young photographer, as he recalls scuba diving with his father-in-law, a retired British soldier who served in Northern Ireland and the Falklands, before the story pivots to a beachside catastrophe in the South of France that upends his marriage and fatherhood.

Scott has carried the piece through multiple stagings since, including a run at the Old Vic in 2018 for the theater’s 200th anniversary, plus performances in Edinburgh and Dublin. A 30-minute film version he shot with Stephens and producer Andrew Porter in 2012 remains available to stream. Sea Wall reached Broadway in 2019 in an expanded double bill, Sea Wall/A Life, pairing Scott’s original monologue, performed by Tom Sturridge, with Jake Gyllenhaal in Nick Payne’s companion piece.

The new filming arrives as Scott’s stock in Hollywood climbs. He stars as actor Ian Charleson in Elsinore, Focus Features’ drama about Charleson’s final stage performance as Hamlet while dying of AIDS, which premiered at Telluride this month to notice from awards prognosticators ahead of its November 20 release. Sea Wall performances begin two weeks before that opening. Tickets are on sale now through SeaWall.nyc.
