Sonya Maitra ends a new intern’s first day with a list of mistakes and a question: what will she do differently to improve? Amy Larsen objects to the severity of the lesson. Before Amy’s accident, her treatment of Sonya had been harsh enough to make her consider resigning. Now the two women are co-chief residents, responsible for teaching doctors chosen by their late mentor, Joan Ridley. Amy recognizes an uncomfortable resemblance, though the premiere leaves room to ask if she is seeing Sonya clearly.

The returning memories give Amy a reason to worry. Flashbacks show her dismissing Sonya’s concerns after a complaint about her patient conduct and speaking about her with contempt to colleagues. Present-day Amy welcomes the interns with patience, then reassures one who falters on her first day. Molly Parker makes that gentleness feel deliberate: Amy has learned what her former confidence cost other people. Yet Sonya’s feedback to Nikki De Silva is specific and demanding, without the belittling Amy remembers inflicting on her. The episode is sharpest when it allows both women to be right about the need to teach well and uncertain about what that requires.

That is a useful question for a medical drama entering its third season. Hospital shows often make the exceptional physician’s abrasiveness look like the price of exceptional care. Doc has a doctor who must live among people who remember paying that price. Amy’s memory loss gives her a chance to change; it has not erased Sonya’s experience or the authority Amy held over her. Handing them the same job puts that history to work in the present. Every correction they give an intern carries an idea of what kind of workplace Westside intends to reproduce.

The premiere tests their leadership with a case that begins during a school rehearsal of Romeo and Juliet. A prop gun fires, and student Torey has a seizure. When her teacher and other students develop symptoms, the hospital must consider what they might all have encountered. The expanding group also puts the interns in front of frightened families before they have learned how to speak with much confidence. Sonya steps in when Nikki is overwhelmed by parents looking for answers. The case gives the new hierarchy a practical purpose, rather than leaving the promotions as an announcement at the top of the hour.

Its explanation carries a social question the episode handles with mixed success. A previous active-shooter drill had distressed a student whose panic attack was recorded and shared; the gunshot at rehearsal brings that fear back into the school community. The doctors identify a stress response spreading among the group. Torey also has an underlying blood-clotting disorder requiring surgery and ongoing treatment, a distinction the story needs to preserve. The students’ symptoms matter even where their causes differ. So does the fact that adults have made repeated rehearsals for a shooting part of ordinary school life.

For a moment, the case asks what “routine” means to the children expected to perform those drills. The hospital can name and treat what arrives at its doors, but the circumstances sending these students there sit outside its reach. Then the premiere has to move on. Amy and Sonya are establishing their partnership, Amy’s memories keep returning, Jake is changing specialties, and a new surgeon is negotiating his place at Westside. The school story raises a difficult question about normalized fear and has limited time to stay with the students who carry it. The mystery’s resolution feels too tidy for the weight placed on it.

Doc Season 3 Review

Dr. Ben Grant’s arrival adds another test of what this hospital rewards. Blair Underwood gives him the ease of someone accustomed to being wanted: he has surgical plans, a research trial that interests Westside’s board, and an apparent past with Amy that she cannot fully recall. His professional ambition is concrete. The board’s willingness to meet his requests gives him room to reshape a department, while his unease with the approach to Torey’s surgery suggests that colleagues will have to reckon with his judgment as well as his reputation. His connection to Amy is charged, but treating him solely as a romantic complication would miss the power he is seeking at work.

The closing recollection of Ben’s message to Amy, warning of trouble over something they did, is designed to pull the viewer into the next episode. It works. Still, it arrives after an hour dense with flashbacks and introductions. Some glimpses of Amy’s past deepen what is happening with Sonya; others seem to promise that an answer is coming later. Doc has plenty of material for a new season in the co-chiefs’ first day alone. Ben’s mystery will earn its space if it exposes something about how decisions get made at Westside, where skill and status have already protected one doctor from the consequences of her conduct.

Doc Season 3 premiered on September 22, 2026, on Fox, with episodes available to stream the following day on Hulu and Fox’s digital platforms. Season 3 picks up as Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker) navigates her new role as co-chief resident while mentoring fresh medical interns and confronting unexpected flashes of her past memories.

The Review

Doc Season 3

7 Score

Amy and Sonya’s first day as co-chief residents gives Doc Season 3 its strongest question: what habits does a hospital pass to the doctors it trains? Their uneasy partnership makes that question personal. The school case connects it to a wider culture of normalized fear, though the premiere resolves the mystery before giving the students enough room. Ben Grant brings promising institutional stakes, but his secret joins an already crowded hour.

PROS

  • Amy and Sonya’s layered teaching dynamic
  • A school case with a pointed social question
  • Ben’s ambitions give his arrival professional stakes

CONS

  • The school case resolves too neatly
  • Flashbacks sometimes serve future mysteries
  • The premiere has limited room for its many new threads
