Jon Watts is being linked to the first film in Simon Kinberg’s developing Star Wars trilogy. Knight Edge Media reported on September 26 that Lucasfilm was considering the director, citing two sources. The Hollywood Reporter subsequently reported that Watts will direct the film. Lucasfilm has not announced his involvement.
Knight Edge describes the prospective film as “Episode X,” but that designation remains unconfirmed. Lucasfilm has identified Kinberg’s trilogy as a project in development without specifying whether it continues the numbered Skywalker saga. The outlet also reports that Daisy Ridley is expected to return as Rey and that a separate Rey film has been shelved; neither claim has been established by a Lucasfilm announcement.
Watts has worked with Lucasfilm before. He co-created the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with Christopher Ford, after directing the three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. Kinberg previously co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
Knight Edge says Watts is being considered for the trilogy’s first film, with no decision reported about the remaining two. Lucasfilm has announced no release date for Kinberg’s trilogy. Its separately announced film Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for theaters in 2027.
