Michael Caine is expected to return to acting at 92, reuniting with Vin Diesel for a sequel to the 2015 fantasy feature The Last Witch Hunter. The project is in development at Lionsgate with Diesel’s One Race Films; Caine’s deal has not yet closed, but he is attached to reprise his role as the 36th Dolan, the priestly adviser to Diesel’s immortal warrior. Entertainment Weekly reported that the sequel comes a decade after the first film’s release.
Lionsgate said the first movie has drawn steady viewership on platforms in recent years, creating clear demand for a follow-up. Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson pointed to durable fan interest and noted that advances in filmmaking tools now make a bigger-scale sequel feasible. The original, directed by Breck Eisner, earned $146.9 million worldwide on a $90 million budget and has resurfaced on streaming in 2025, helping fuel the franchise’s second life.
Caine announced his retirement in October 2023, saying his World War II drama The Great Escaper would likely be his final screen performance. The two-time Oscar winner has since kept a public friendship with Diesel, with recent sightings and social posts drawing attention back to their 2015 collaboration. Reuters chronicled Caine’s retirement statement at the time, and new development chatter now frames his return as a selective, role-specific exception.
The Last Witch Hunter centered on Diesel’s Kaulder, an immortal tasked with policing rogue witches in modern-day New York; Caine’s Dolan serves as his mentor and chronicler. Lionsgate and One Race are steering the sequel toward a swift production path, with the studio emphasizing the title’s long-tail audience and the prospect of staging more ambitious set pieces than were possible in 2015. While casting and scheduling details remain in flux, early materials describe Caine’s involvement as thematically fitting, echoing his character’s decision to delay retirement within the story.
