Sherri Shepherd signed off from her nationally syndicated daytime talk show Sherri on May 21, closing out four seasons with tears, tributes from Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, and a farewell visit from best friend Niecy Nash — who made her sixth and final appearance on the programme. The day after the taping, Shepherd posted a video of herself walking through the empty Chelsea Studios set, writing: “It was a bittersweet end to a life I got to know so well. But here is to new beginnings…if you thought you were sick of me before just you wait.”
The show launched in September 2022 and earned six Daytime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host for Shepherd. It occupied the time slot previously held by The Wendy Williams Show, a pointed origin for a programme that Shepherd built into something distinctly her own — complete with two NAACP Image Awards, one for Outstanding Talk Series and another for Outstanding Host.
Debmar-Mercury, the Lionsgate-owned production and distribution company, announced the cancellation in February, attributing it to pay TV declines, a challenging advertising environment, and fierce competition from video podcasts on platforms like YouTube. Co-presidents Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus said in a statement that the decision “does not reflect on the strength of the show” and that they intended to “explore alternatives on other platforms” — though no such alternative has been announced.
The cancellation landed on the same day NBCUniversal confirmed The Kelly Clarkson Show would also end, marking a significant contraction in first-run syndicated daytime programming. Come autumn, Tamron Hall, The Jennifer Hudson Show, and The Drew Barrymore Show will be the surviving entries in a genre that once anchored broadcast afternoons.
In her final monologue, Shepherd thanked viewers for “letting me grow in front of you,” adding: “Even when I stumbled, you loved me anyway. From my heart to yours, this has truly been my great honor.”
Shepherd has signalled she has no plans to slow down. She has a Hallmark movie due soon and is travelling to South Africa to film another project. She is also weighing a podcast, though she acknowledged the market is “saturated with millions of other listening options.” Celebrity well-wishers on Instagram included Taraji P. Henson, Niecy Nash, Lena Waithe, and Donnie Wahlberg.
