Marvel Studios released the first full trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday” on Monday, giving audiences their clearest look yet at Robert Downey Jr.’s turn as Doctor Doom ahead of the film’s December 18 theatrical release. The footage arrived alongside the opening of ticket sales for Infinity Vision, a new premium theatrical format Disney says delivers larger screens and enhanced sound for the film’s debut.
The trailer shows Doom assembling a multiverse-spanning threat that forces the Avengers into uneasy alliances with heroes pulled from three separate franchises. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor squares off against Doom directly and reunites with Chris Evans, whose Captain America returns to the MCU for the first time since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
X-Men characters long confined to Fox’s separate film universe now cross into Marvel’s flagship series, including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops and Channing Tatum’s Gambit, a role he originated in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts, both introduced to the MCU within the past year, join the fight as well.
Downey’s casting marks a striking reversal for an actor whose Tony Stark sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos in “Endgame.” Marvel has offered few details on how Doom fits into established continuity, though the character is widely believed to be a variant of Iron Man originating in an alternate universe. He appeared briefly, face obscured, in a post-credits scene from “Fantastic Four: First Steps” earlier this year.
Joe and Anthony Russo direct from a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, returning to Avengers duty for the first time since helming “Infinity War” and “Endgame.” Joe Russo has described Doom as a character defined by complexity rather than simple villainy. The film sets up “Avengers: Secret Wars,” due a year later, which Marvel intends to close out the franchise’s Multiverse Saga.
Monday’s trailer largely reprises footage first shown to theater owners at CinemaCon in April, though Marvel is expected to reveal additional material during its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday. The studio also plans to attach the new trailer to prints of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” when that film opens worldwide next week.
