Rob Reiner won a posthumous Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on Sunday night, nine months after he and his wife were stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home. Betty Gilpin took the guest actress prize in the same category, capping an emotional Night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys ahead of the Sept. 14 Primetime ceremony.
Reiner earned the award for his role in FX’s “The Bear.” Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey asked the audience to rise before announcing the winner. “It’s appropriate to stand for this one,” she said. “I know we all wish Rob could be here tonight.” The crowd responded with a standing ovation.
Reiner and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead on Dec. 14, 2025, killed with multiple stab wounds inside their home. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested the next day. A grand jury indicted him in July on two counts of first-degree murder, adding special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and multiple murders on top of the original weapon charge.
He pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail. Prosecutors have said the added allegations expose him to a possible death sentence or life without parole; a pretrial hearing is set for later this month. Reiner directed “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men” over a four-decade career, and had appeared with his family just months before the killings at the Los Angeles premiere of “Spinal Tap II.”
Gilpin won for playing Sarah Westcott Warren in Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay,” her fourth Emmy nomination and first win. She delivered her acceptance speech entirely in verse and opened by thanking her date for the evening, former “GLOW” co-star Alison Brie.
The Creative Arts Emmys, spread across two nights, folded in categories once reserved for the Primetime broadcast, including supporting actor and actress in a limited series. Saturday’s and Sunday’s ceremonies will air together Sept. 12, followed by the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, airing live on NBC Sept. 14.
