Sean Penn Backs Ukrainian Youth Documentary “Black Sunflowers” at TIFF Premiere

Executive produced by Sean Penn, the film follows young Ukrainians moving between underground parties, street racing and the front lines of the war with Russia.

A new documentary tracking Ukrainian twentysomethings who split their time between underground raves and active combat zones made its world premiere Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, drawing attention for its refusal to frame the war strictly through images of destruction.

Director James Marcus Haney built “Black Sunflowers” around a handful of subjects: a soldier who lost part of his leg and now dances at parties on a blade prosthesis, a young woman preparing for compulsory military training, a photographer who shifted from nature work to war coverage after 2022, and a truck driver who performs street drifts back home between deployments. Haney originally planned a 12-minute short. His first trip to Ukraine changed that. “When missiles are coming into your city,” he has said of the moment the project’s scope expanded, describing how quickly a narrow idea gave way to a fuller portrait of a generation.

Actor Sean Penn signed on as an executive producer, extending his involvement with Ukraine coverage after his 2023 documentary “Superpower,” which chronicled the early days of the full-scale invasion from Kyiv. Haney said he wanted to avoid piling onto an already crowded field of grim war films. “There are so many films that have come out about Ukraine so far and a lot of them are very, very war-focused and heavy and grim,” he told Deadline at a festival studio appearance, adding that those films remain necessary but that his aimed elsewhere: at ordinary life persisting alongside catastrophe.

Subject Tetyana Diianchuk described dancing as a coping mechanism for soldiers readjusting to civilian rhythms. “It’s very hard to return to your daily life,” she said, explaining that movement on a dance floor helps veterans sort through the psychological weight of combat. Haney also addressed the Trump administration’s cuts to USAID, arguing the funding rollback has compounded hardship for soldiers already stretched thin.

The film arrives amid a wave of Ukraine-focused documentaries, including Mstyslav Chernov’s “2000 Meters to Andriivka” and “Militantropos.” Sales agents Charades and CAA Media Finance have taken on international rights ahead of the festival run. Additional TIFF screenings are set for September 13 and 18, at Scotiabank Theatre.
