Netflix and Blizzard Confirm “Diablo” Animated Series Is in Development

Blizzard president Johanna Faries revealed the project at BlizzCon, reviving an adaptation effort that collapsed in 2020 amid a legal dispute between the two companies.

Blizzard Entertainment confirmed Saturday that Netflix is developing an animated series based on “Diablo,” ending years of speculation about whether the dark fantasy franchise would return to a format the two companies had already tried and abandoned once before.

Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim. “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens,” the company said in a statement, adding that the Diablo project marks the start of a broader push to adapt its properties for television. Faries told the crowd that other Blizzard franchises, including Overwatch and Warcraft, are also under discussion, though she declined to share specifics.

The series will be set in Sanctuary, the franchise’s gothic universe defined by the war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. Beyond that, Blizzard has released almost no details. No studio, showrunner, cast, episode count, or release window has been announced, and the company said more information will come as the project develops. Netflix did not issue its own announcement alongside Blizzard’s, leaving the confirmation to live on the game publisher’s channels and social accounts.

This marks the second time Netflix and Blizzard have pursued a Diablo adaptation together. An earlier version surfaced in 2018, when writer Andrew Cosby confirmed he was in final talks to write and showrun an anime-style adaptation for Activision and Netflix. That version later fell apart amid a legal dispute after Blizzard sued Netflix over the streamer’s hiring of Blizzard’s then-chief financial officer, Spencer Neumann. Netflix has since built a track record adapting other game franchises into animated form, including “Castlevania” and “Devil May Cry.”

The announcement lands as the Diablo franchise marks its 30th anniversary; the original game launched in 1996 and was followed by sequels in 2000, 2012, and 2023. Blizzard used the same BlizzCon appearance to confirm “Diablo V” for a spring 2029 release and to unveil a “Diablo IV” collection coming to Switch 2 next week.
